Northern Field
William Northern Army Air Field, operational since June 1942, was a key training center for B-24 bombers and paratroopers under the Third Air Force. Located just five miles from Camp Forrest, it was Tennessee’s third-largest airfield during World War II, covering 1,300 acres and featuring three runways.
Initially named Camp Forrest Field, it was renamed in November 1942 to honor Second Lieutenant William Lee Northern, Jr., the first Tennessean killed in World War II. The site now operates as Tullahoma Regional Airport, continuing its rich aviation history.
